About the Role:
We are seeking a skilled Database Operations Engineer or Database Operations Administrator to manage our mission-critical database infrastructure. In this role, you will operate and maintain a highly agile and scalable production environment across multiple regulated entities. You will work with large, Terra Byte-sized open source relational databases and high throughput NoSQL datastores, ensuring they serve tens of thousands of queries per second. This role demands specialists in DB Ops to handle DB issues due to the high impact of potential problems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate mission-critical database infrastructure in a highly agile and scalable production environment across multiple regulated entities.
- Manage and optimize large Terra Byte-sized open source relational databases and high throughput NoSQL datastores.
- Maintain mission-critical database systems deployed on AWS, RDS, Aurora, and various NoSQL technologies.
- Continuously improve the operability and observability of deployed database clusters.
- Automate routine database maintenance tasks to enhance efficiency and reduce manual intervention.
- Implement and manage database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and availability.
- Investigate and resolve issues in the internals of RDBMS, operating systems, and hardware.
- Troubleshoot production environments during high severity events (SEV0, SEV1), potentially preventing millions of dollars in damages.
- Control information flow across multiple micro-service clusters, considering cascading effects while designing and implementing solutions.
- Collaborate with development teams to design and implement database schema changes, ensuring optimal performance and scalability.
- Conduct regular security audits and implement best practices to safeguard database systems against potential threats.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for database infrastructure, processes, and procedures.
- Present Root Cause Analysis (RCA) in post-event debriefings to stakeholders, providing sound technical solutions to prevent future issues, such as resolving high concurrency locking issues in DB clusters.
Expertise Required:
- Over 2 years of DBA experience in the software industry with RDS/Aurora (MySQL/Postgres) and NoSQL (preferred).
- Working knowledge of NoSQL datastores, including but not limited to DynamoDB, Aerospike, MongoDB, Cassandra, ScyllaDB, and Elasticsearch.
- Strong knowledge of Linux performance, memory management, I/O tuning, configuration, security, networking, clusters, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with TimescaleDB, Redis/Elasticache/MemDB, and database proxies including ProxySQL and Maxscale.
- Familiarity with CDC systems such as DMS, Debezium, and Maxwell.
- Knowledge of database sharding technologies like Vitess, Jepants, and TiDB.
- Experience with deployment automation tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, Chef, and Pulumi.
- Strong understanding of HA/DR best practice architecture
